So okay. No Rapture, no Day of Judgement, no precipitation into Infinite Nothingness. To quote the great Nelson Munz, “Ha-ha!” Life goes on as usual for a Saturday and I would really recommend that the God-fearing should perhaps shut the fuck up for a while after getting this one so massively wrong. Let’s not hear any more demented crap about Creation Science, Armageddon, or the fetus having a soul for at least a couple of months.

So The Rapture is scheduled for tomorrow at 6.00pm (all time zones) and, while hugely enjoying the prospect, I’m just biding my time for the moment and going about my pagan business. The fun can start after the Christians are out of here.

This is the real globalization, comrades!
"Spain’s people’s movement has finally awoken, la Puerta del Sol in Madrid is now the country’s Tahrir Square, and the ‘Arab Spring’ has been joined by what is now bracing to become a long ‘European Summer’. As people across the Arab world continue their popular struggle for justice, peace and democracy, Spain’s disillusioned citizens have finally caught on with full force. Slow at first, hopeful that Spain’s dire economic conditions would magically correct themselves, the Spanish street has finally understood that democratic and economic justice and peace will not come from the pulpits of the country’s corrupt political elite. Amidst local and regional election campaigns, with the banners of the different political parties plastered across the country’s streets, people are saying ‘enough!’ Disillusioned youth, unemployed, pensioners, students, immigrants and other disenfranchised groups have emulated their brothers in the Arab world and are now demanding a voice – demanding an opportunity to live with dignity." No, actually that’s Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, who were younger and better looking, but we have the advantage of being still alive, although so far lacking suitable photographs. The band is (for the moment) working under the collective name “Mick Farren & The Last Men Standing” and that comprises Russell Hunter, Duncan (Sandy) Sanderson, and Andy Colquhoun – all former Deviants and Pink Fairies – Tim Rundall and Jaki Windmill (formerly of Space Ritual) and, of course your humble servant. Serious rehearsals are underway and the immediate goal is Glastonbury Fayre where we’ll be playing on the 1971 Stage at 5.40pm on Saturday June 25th. But, before that, we’ll be doing a couple of warmups. The first is around 2pm on Sunday June 5th , upstairs at the Prince Albert on Trafalgar Street in Brighton where Andy Colquhoun and I will be doing our poetry and electric guitar madness, and may well be joined by the fine slide of Tim Rundall. Then, on Friday, June 17th. the entire band will be doing a special show, again in Brighton, at The Hydrant, Preston Circus, London Rd for all those who can’t make it to Glastonbury. That’s the plan so far. More details will show up here and on Facebook as showtime draws nearer.

“KAMPALA (Reuters) - A Ugandan bill that mandated the death penalty for gays who are "repeat offenders" appeared to have been shelved again on Friday when it was not debated in parliament after provoking an international outcry. Parliament speaker Edward Ssekandi dissolved the house on Friday and said there was not enough time to debate the bill. A new parliament is to be sworn in on Wednesday. "I think we expected that this would happen," an lawmaker who did not want to be named, told Reuters. "The pressure had been too much over the last two years. It had to disappear."
And the odious (but not actually hell-spawned) Donald Trump will not be running for President.
“Donald Trump has confirmed today he will not run for President in the 2012 election. The announcement comes one week after he fell from first placed candidate to tied fifth place among Republicans in a survey by the Public Policy Polling organisation. The 64-year-old real estate mogul kept America guessing for months over whether he would run for the 2012 Republican nomination, among intense media speculation. His statement was made as NBC unveiled its new primetime schedule to advertisers, which has intensified speculation that his whole campaign was a big publicity stunt.” (Image from MrMR)

In case you’ve missed the gist of the unfolding scandal this the latest…
“NEW YORK – Dominique Strauss-Kahn's reputation with women earned him the nickname "the great seducer," and not even an affair with a subordinate could knock the International Monetary Fund leader off a political path pointed in the direction of the French presidency. All that changed with charges that he sexually assaulted a maid in his hotel room, a case that generated shock and revulsion, especially in his home country. Police said the maid picked Strauss-Kahn out of a lineup. Unless the charges are quickly dropped, they could destroy his chances in a presidential race that is just starting to heat up. The IMF, which plays a key role in efforts to control the European debt crisis, named an acting leader and said it remains "fully functioning and operational" despite Saturday's arrest. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, told The Associated Press that his client will plead not guilty. He and another lawyer went in and out of the Harlem police precinct where Strauss-Kahn was being held early Sunday afternoon, and declined to answer reporters' questions until the arraignment, which was expected later Sunday. He denies all the charges against him," Brafman said. "And that's all I can really say right now." Brafman is one of the city's most high-profile defense attorneys. His clients have included mobsters and such celebrities as Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and ex-New York Giants star Plaxico Burress. Strauss-Kahn, 62, was arrested less than four hours after the alleged assault, plucked from first class on a Paris-bound Air France flight that was just about to leave the gate at John F. Kennedy International Airport.”
I find it close to stunning that every media commentator and pundit I have read seems more interested in how Strauss-Kahn’s arrest will effect world business in general and the current European debt bailouts in particular. Few if any have reflected on how this son-of-a-bitch, at the top of the global power elite, has an almost medieval attitude to ordinary people. So he wants to rape the maid in his $3000 a night New York hotel room? No moral problem. So he maybe went a little too far? Hop a Air France flight at JFK and get the fuck out of there first class. So how do we expect this bastard to treat the impoverished population of a country crippled by capitalist created debt? I have a bad feeling that only a small corner of the curtain has been lifted and revealed just a tiny glimpse of what swine those in control really are.

Rand Paul is named for Ayn Rand and his Republican idiot mindset is the reason the USA is declining and falling faster than the Roman Empire. Unfortunately he may want to be president.
“With regard to the idea of whether you have a right to health care, you have realize what that implies,” the senator said. “It’s not an abstraction. I’m a physician. That means you have a right to come to my house and conscript me.”
“It means you believe in slavery,” Paul added. “It means that you’re going to enslave not only me, but the janitor at my hospital, the person who cleans my office, the assistants who work in my office, the nurses.”
“Basically, once you imply a belief in a right to someone’s services — do you have a right to plumbing? Do you have a right to water? Do you have right to food? — you’re basically saying you believe in slavery.”
“I’m a physician in your community and you say you have a right to health care,” Paul continued. “You have a right to beat down my door with the police, escort me away and force me to take care of you? That’s ultimately what the right to free health care would be.”

Because of our perverse fondness for Nazi flying saucers, we’ve been following progress of the movie Iron Sky for some time now. Here’s a synopsis and a new teaser…
“As World War II comes to an end in 1945, Hans Kammler and other German scientists make a breakthrough in anti-gravity research. From a secret base in the Antarctic, Nazi spaceships are sent to the "dark side" of the Moon to establish the military base "Schwarze Sonne." Their plan is to build a powerful fleet and return to conquer Earth. The film is set in the year 2018 when their descendants finally return.”

Around the time of the LA riots, I wrote the line “is it a new day dawning or just another city on fire?” For once I feel it may be a new day dawning. It might just be a result of having finally had a really good night’s (and half a day’s) sleep but I am filled with a quite unusual sense of optimism. Just because the known-world seems to be in windmill panic and teetering on lips of the abyss doesn’t mean that we have necessarily to fall into it. And even if we do, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the plunge like one of those extreme theme-park rides that seek to thrill us by means of a fear/adrenaline/gravity rush. Or maybe this is all a result of a kind of geezer recklessness because – at my age and in my condition – there really isn’t that much to lose (as long as someone cares for Finn should I miscalculate) and that, as the peach-drunk Pearl long ago informed us, is a definition of freedom.
